In a survey carried out in India in 2020, 39% of employers in India say a skills shortage is the leading reason for vacancies in organizations. The current employability rate in India is at a dismal 15%. A large section of graduates is failing to match the industry expectations, according to a report published in India Today.

Given this scenario, a timely intervention that will help fresh graduates and job aspirants understand their own capabilities and help them get a clear perspective becomes critical. It’s with this objective that infyni conducted on campus for the students of Maulana Azad College of Engineering & Technology in Patna.

“Our mission was two-fold,” said Tapas Kumar, National Head for Operations & Partnerships. “On the one hand we offered a perspective about the market, industry and existing social paradigms that graduates need to be cognizant of. Second, and more so the importance of goal setting and career planning,” he explained.

The hall was packed with B Tech students from all streams including Mechanical, Civil, EEE, ECE & Computer Science. During the 2-hour long interactive seminar students asked about the scope for entrepreneurial opportunities in the current market situation. And if they were to follow their dreams and passion to build their own companies what were the recommendations.

Questions on soft skills and communication, how to exude confidence while addressing interviewees and company heads was also a very often asked question. Kumar discussed the techniques of goal setting and the significance of this one step before any career planning.

Once the path is chosen, how to go about building one’s skills towards the intended goal is largely straightforward, says Kumar. India offers multiple avenues for developing skills online and offline.

High-level diplomats from several African nations came together in New Delhi for a key two-day investment meet on July 19. Close to 20 African countries with 40 ministers representing Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Eswatini, Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Niger, Malawi, Mauritius, Sudan, Namibia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone.

The aim is to encourage development of private investment from India in African countries. Started in 2005, there couldn’t have been a better time for India.

Existing trade

Lets look at the opportunities India has, today. This year’s conclave focuses on infrastructure development and trade finance, education and training, agriculture and food processing, consultancy services, and healthcare.

Indian companies have steadily increased their presence in Africa, over the years. Trade between Africa and India increased from about USD 7 billion to USD 60 billion, from 2001 - 2017, making India Africa’s 4^th top trading partner.

However, bilateral trade between India and the 48 countries of sub-Saharan Africa dropped from USD 56 billion to USD 47 billion, from 2020 to 2021. We will not only have to play catch up, but we will have to manage this more focussed.

India’s expertise

Take education and training. Africa has a large working-age population and a growing middle class both ingredients for India to add value to. A lot of India’s success came through efforts to create the right environment for the future generation. Educating and upskilling Africa’s youth through digital means can help bring overall prosperity.  

The private sector is key to this strategy, particularly in the areas of skill and capacity-building initiatives, health care, agriculture, and the digital revolution, notes a report by Brooking. With a determined government ready to support initiatives in Africa, now is an opportune moment for the Indian private sector.

A free bitcoin pizza stall were among the treats available for attendees this year where blockchain and cryptocurrency firms took over its main street.

Why pizza

It was on May 22 that Laszlo Hanyecz used the crypto currency BTC to buy two pizzas from Papa John’s in Florida, in 2010. Hanyecz paid 10,000 BTC, then worth $41, to buy the pizza. It was the first commodity to be bought with this digital currency. Today, the value of 10,000 BTC is around USD 300 million. This is after the recent plunge in the market value of cryptocurrencies.

Cryptos had shed around USD 800 billion in market value as of May 2022. Several crypto currency companies, nevertheless have taken promotional space at Davos overshadowing bigger institutions like Bank of America.

But then that is the controversy Bitcoins and Cryptocurrencies inherently bring.

Controversies

China has cracked down on cryptocurrencies with increasing intensity throughout 2021. While cryptocurrency exchanges are legal in the United States, the US Treasury has emphasized an urgent need for crypto regulations to combat global and domestic criminal activities.

Experts believe it is likely that paper money will disappear someday. Experts believe the rails of payments, remittances and many other areas of the financial services industry will be re-architected to be more efficient, cheaper and with fewer gatekeepers. They say blockchain technology seems to be a step in this direction. 

Adam Neumann, infamous for running his startup WeWork into loss has returned with a new startup idea in cryptocurrency called Flowcarbon. And the company has already raised a total of USD 70 million in venture capital funding and sale of its carbon-backed token.

Amidst all this, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are “worth nothing.” Lagarde opined that cryptos should be regulated to protect inexperienced investors. 

India’s policy

India has not always been much accommodative, and RBI governor Shaktikanta Das on May 23, 2022 made it clear once again.

“We have been cautioning against crypto and look at what has happened to the crypto market now. Had we been regulating it already, then people would have raised questions about what happened to regulations," Das told CNBC TV18.

“This is something whose underlying (value) is nothing. There are big questions on how do you regulate it. Our position remains very clear, it will seriously undermine the monetary, financial and macroeconomic stability of India," the RBI Governor added. ~

India has emerged as the country with the highest number of games downloaded per month in the world. According to Sensor Tower research, the country saw 761.2 million game downloads on mobiles in March, 2022. This makes it 16% of the total worldwide downloads, followed by the US market at 8.7% and Brazil at 7.6%.

For quite some time now, India has been the biggest markets for the gaming industry in categories like mobile, fantasy, augmented reality, virtual reality, consoles and cloud-based games. Other studies also point to similar findings.

Of the 834 million internet users in India most play video games on some device or the other, according to Statista, 2021. India seems to be in the top 5 markets worldwide by share of internet users, who play video games on any device.

What is more interesting is that Indian gaming industries are using smart technologies to enhance the experience for gamers. Especially so, in fantasy sports. Leading companies like Dream Sports and Mobile Premier League have made huge strides in this kind of user experience.

However, India is not among the top revenue generators as yet. But revenues in the mobile game segment is expected to reach USD 3.83 billion in 2022 with earning growing by 7% every year.

This could be a good time to brush up your skills in technologies like AI and Augmented Reality.

The new syllabus will be prepared based on Indian history and traditions, along with history, geography of Uttarakhand will be taught to students and local folk languages will be encouraged along with Veda Purana and Gita.

“We'll be including Vedas, Gita, Ramayana & history of Uttarakhand in the syllabus after taking suggestions from the public and consulting the academicians," said the Minister.

There has been a worldwide interest in the study of ancient Indian knowledge systems. For its first batch of 12 online certificate courses of three-month duration related to ancient Indian knowledge systems, the Gujarat Technological University (GTU) received enrolment requests from a total of 889 students. According to officials conducting the courses, 238 people enrolled for the ‘Study of Vedas’ from countries such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Tanzania and Australia.

The Vedas are considered to be one of the most sacred scriptures of the Hindu religion and among the world’s oldest, going back to 1500 BC. Experts say Vedic Management helps in managing change in today’s world of clutter, confusion, chaos and competition. It provides guidance on meandering through the various phases of life. ~

For Shitij Kapur, president and principal of King’s College London its exciting times for building partnerships in India. Speaking to Business Standard on a visit to India, Kapur was referring to the recent changes the Indian government was making in University education.

Earlier in April 2022, the University Grants Commission (UGC) began approving academic collaboration between Indian and foreign colleges that allows three different types of degree programmes — dual, joint and twinning degree programmes — to students from India and abroad. It’s the first time such dual degrees are being allowed.

Students who complete the programme will have a degree jointly awarded by the Indian higher educational institution and the collaborating foreign institution. 

The eligibility criteria requires that the Indian college must have a minimum National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) score of 3.01 or figure in the top 100 in the university category of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) or in the top 1000 of Times Higher Education or QS World University ranking. While the foreign universities should be in the top 1000 of Times Higher Education or QS World University ranking to be eligible to collaborate with Indian educational institutions.

Kapur believes such dual degrees are an attractive proposition. The world increasingly needs people who belong to more than one discipline, he was quoted as saying.

Bosch, the German-based multinational engineering and automotive technology firm, chose India to set up its largest technology center outside of Germany a quarter century ago. Today, with its headquarters in Bengaluru, Bosch's technology wing renamed itself from Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions (RBEI) to Bosch Global Software Technologies (BGSW).

"Our work involves the application of electronics and computation to solve domain problems," Dattatri Salagame, CEO, president and MD, BGSW was quoted in The Hindu as saying. For example, in mobility — autonomous driving, vehicle computing, gateways, V2X (vehicle-to-anything) —, connectivity, electrification and safety are some of the most challenging problems that our engineers work on. In healthcare, BGSW is focused on products, solutions to bring detection of anomalies in blood anatomy, hemoglobin-based sensing in a digital non-invasive way using computer vision and allied data technologies. There are similar opportunities that we work on in energy, enterprise digitalization and other domains.

Hiring Plans 

We will be hiring around 5,500 professionals in 2022, to add to our existing employee base of 25, 000. We are scouting for talent that have a deep understanding of technology and an ability to solve real-time problems. Hence, we are looking at capabilities in Data science, AI, Cybersecurity, Mechatronics, Robotics, Edge computing, Hyperscale Cloud development/deployment and full stack IoT to name a few. We would also be hiring experts with deep domain and systems knowledge, especially in mobility. BGSW would play a major role in digital transformation of Bosch globally and hence, we would be keen to engage talent with proven enterprise digital-transformation competencies.

Expansion 

In India, we are expanding beyond Coimbatore and Bengaluru to include Hyderabad and Pune which will be operational in mid-2022. To start with, we will be hiring around 1,000 professionals this year for these two new centres and ramp up these to 5,000 professionals by 2025. We are planning to expand our footprint to North and East India as well. Also, we are opening a new centre in North Vietnam at Hanoi and looking at hiring 400 people this year. We are incubating a centre in Poland. We will also be continuing to expand client-facing roles in the U.S and Japan.

This year’s Global Technology Summit (Dec 14-16) considers the changing nature of technology, and how prepared we are for emerging realities. Let’s see what has happened so far. Held in collaboration with Carnegie India and the Govt. of India, the summit has been bringing together industry experts, global policymakers & scholars for the last 6 years.

Speaking on air at the opening event UK Prime Minister described India and UK as natural partners. External Affairs Minister Jaishankar spoke of new alliances like the Quad and how, to become part of the global supply chains, India needed to first strengthen its own domestic supply chain networks.

The potential of 1.2 billion people was not missed. Experts spoke of how UPI payments, since its launch in India five years ago, have grown at an annual rate of about 200 % in India, easing transactions for the majority.

Among the panel discussions, Arundhati Bhattacharya, (CEO of Salesforce) along with head of TeamLease Services Limited was to talk about data security and the possible roadblocks. The Indian government that launched the Digital India programme in 2015, is now planning to leverage growing opportunities in manufacturing, engineering, and digitalization. However, it faces a few challenges such as delays in development of infrastructure, rural connectivity, digital literacy, and data security.

For businesses transitioning to cloud, robust security is imperative to protect data, from theft, leakage, or corruption. One session was aimed at discussing ways to maximize the cybersecurity benefits provided by cloud service providers and minimize the cybersecurity risks.

Businesses are slowly transitioning to cloud with an objective to enhance efficiency, innovate responsibly, and reduce the carbon footprint of their operations. Ken Haig from Amazon Web Services explored the financial and environmental benefits of the cloud.

A panel discussion by SAP addressed policies and investments that companies were investing in, such as innovative cloud solutions to ensure building a sustainable and inclusive future. Similarly, Mani Kishore from Banyan Nation talked about technologies that companies could leverage to focus more on the adoption and promotion of green tech for sustainable and inclusive development.

One session was dedicated to exploring how online and offline retail models were merging on the back of technology, and driving digitization for millions of businesses.
