Cybersecurity Professionals in Short Supply

Cybersecurity services are expected to grow in India at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of about 21 percent

According to the report released in August 2021, the industry that generated USD 4.3 billion in 2019 will be making USD 7.6 billion by 2022. This is only fair to assume, given the increasing incidents of data breaches the country has seen, recently.

Unfortunately, 3.5 million positions would remain unfulfilled by the year-end. We simply don’t have enough skilled people in cybersecurity, says Varun Pathak, cybersecurity expert, and instructor with infyni.

Why Cybersecurity professionals are so important

India is among the top 5 most targeted countries in the world, according to reports. Going by the number of cyber-attacks in the last two decades, the US (156 attacks), followed by the UK (47), and India (23) are the leading targets. Then comes Germany with 21 attacks.

These 4 ransom attacks by cybercriminals that cost India crores are just an indication of our vulnerability and the immediate demand for cybersecurity professionals.

Air India in May 2021

4.5 million passengers’ data was breached following a sophisticated cyber-attack on SITA, a travel company.

Tech Mahindra in March 2021

Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s Smart City project, managed by Tech Mahindra in Pune was hacked, costing the company Rs. 5 crores in losses.

Haldiram in October 2020

Attackers demanded a ransom of Rs 5.6 crores from Haldiram, for access.

CERT in November 2020

Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) issued a warning that the virus ‘Egregor’ capable of stealing vital corporate data was targeting companies in India.

A lot of attacks in India go unreported, say, experts. 68% of Indian organizations surveyed by cybersecurity firm Sophos admit to having been attacked in the last 1 year. As remote work began, more companies were, and continue to be, at risk.

In its second-quarter report, Chennai-based cybersecurity firm Cyber Security Works revealed new vulnerabilities in the ransomware arsenal. More details on this can be found here.

Specialized talent still hard to find

Fascinating as the field is, there are myriad roles in Cybersecurity requiring different skills. Here are some examples of Cyber security jobs:

§  Security operations center (SOC) analyst

§  Incident responder

§  Threat analyst

§  Security consultant

§  Security analyst

§  Penetration tester

Open for freshers, as well as mid-level professionals, companies like Cyber Security Works are currently hiring. Those looking for a career change should explore upskilling or reskilling. Infyni offers free trials for its online courses. Join a few sessions to understand if the course suits you.
