Transfer Your Skills to a New Career
The pandemic may be as good a time to take your skills to a completely different job. Find out how.
According to estimates by Money control, about 10 million Indians had lost their jobs by August 2020 due to the pandemic (compared to 5 million lost jobs in the previous financial crisis of 2007). Most of them were in industries like travel and tourism, hotels, and the hospitality sector.
With nowhere else to go searching, some started exploring new frontiers. Many started home-based catering, a few found successes with vegetable gardening. Others with a more mathematical incline took to coding. That was the beginning of the Ed-tech boom. Venture capitalists seem to have seen the potential – investments in Ed-tech rose from USD 8 billion in 2018 to USD 16 billion.
Everyone has skills that are relevant to more than the one company they work for. If you are good at critical thinking it doesn’t matter if you were at an event management company. An Ed-tech may need your problem-solving skills. Likewise, what you learned reading and analyzing as a journalist may be translated into a successful career as a business analyst.
Therefore, it’s time to sit down and do a bit of self-analysis. Write down a list of jobs you would love doing, given the opportunity. Look for what is common in this list. Is it communicative skills, analytical skills, designing or marketing skills?
Next, find out if you really like doing it as a job. Burnish the skill up by taking a course online. It could be a creative writing course, a design course, or a course on social media marketing. Alternately, request for an internship in the job you desire. At the end of it, you will know whether you want to pursue it as a career.
Who knows, it could be the beginning of a brand new career. Life is full of possibilities they say if you look hard enough.
We will explore the 5 most sought after online courses that are trending in the Ed-tech world this season.
