Top 3 Skills Needed for Data Scientists Today

Data Science continues to be the second most wanted skills to date. It is really fascinating how the position has remain unchanged for so long. Uddipta Sarma who has been training young Data Scientists at infyni points out the 3 must-have skills.

Experts reckon the amount of data and analysis that need to be done seem unlikely to decline. Data Science will only continue to grow in importance in the future.

The scope of a Data Scientist’s job – having so many verticals to work on – and its diverse applications in both personal and professional aspects is another reason why it will continue to be a much-demanded skill.

Starting from ordering food and booking rides to games, automation, artificial intelligence and so on, works on mining data.

The whole world is data and we live inside a data circle. To understand our surroundings and analyze it is the essence of data science. First let’s look at who the data scientist is, and why he is so relevant.

This gentleman is responsible for gathering, processing, modelling and interpreting data using technology, and identifying industry trends by ensuring data cleaning, accuracy and completeness for delivering actionable plans.

If this appeals to you, then the Data Scientist’s (also one of the top highest paying job), is what you should be skilling for. Becoming a data scientist is not rocket science. But like most other jobs, the more advanced your position, you will need to acquire a greater suite of skills to be really successful in this field.

So here are the top 3 skills you will need, to make yourself valuable in some of the top multinationals in the world.

1. Programming: As you are expected to give instructions to the computer, you need to be a good programmer. So the mandatory programming languages you are expected to know are one of the three, or at least two of them: Python, R, SQL. I know this from my own experience beginning as a Data Scientist.

You will be required to solve business problems using these programming languages. These languages will gravitate you towards dedicated libraries for data analysis, visualization and machine learning.

2.   Data visualization and storytelling: This is a key component of being a data scientist as you are expected to find key insights, and shoot a pile of eye and mind-catchy solutions. Understanding data, breaking it down into smaller granular pieces, and transforming them into a nutshell, using charts, visuals, graphs, etc. is what a data scientist should be proficient in. Tableau /Power BI and Excel will be the main tools you will need to present your data, in my opinion.

3.   Math and Statistics: A data scientist will be expected, in any business, especially those are data-driven, to understand different approaches to numbers including estimates, distribution and tests – in order to make recommendable decisions. To make a mark in this segment, calculus, linear algebra, descriptive and inferential statistics will be your armors.

It made a huge impact for me when I started out in my career as a Data Scientist. Now these skills may vary from company to company. Some data science roles are more database and program oriented, while others focus more on math. Which is why it makes sense to refresh yourself with the latest skills needed for the job.

A lot of live and online courses these days provide you the flexibility to study while working. Because they are remote, you can easily avail the best instructors to train you.

In my Power Business Intelligence course,  all classes are live and interactive so that participants clarify their doubts on the spot. Interactive and live discussions are the best way to remember a skill you learn.

If you are looking to get hired in 2022 as a Data Scientist, you may want to try one of infyni’s live online courses. Reasonably priced for a live 1-1 training, take a trial for free. Interact with your trainer and decide. ~
