5 Things You Need to Know as a Data Scientist

In the business world there is no shortage of data. But knowing how to make sense of it and leverage the information to make operations leaner, or optimize business processes is critical.

Data analysts helped Southwest Airlines save USD 100 million by reducing their fleet’s idle time waiting on tarmac at the airport. Global courier company UPS used data science to figure out new routes for their delivery vehicles. It saved them millions of dollars in time and fuel.

From banking and consumer goods to manufacturing, or farming, there are opportunities for data scientist almost everywhere.

In the two largest hubs for Data Analysts, US and India the demand for data analysts is way ahead of available skilled people. In India, the 5 biggest companies – Fractal Analytics, Accenture, IBM, Absolut data, and Genpact are currently looking for Data Scientists to join immediately.

Interested in Data Science but not sure if it’s the right choice for you? Lets see what experts have to say about the essential skillsets needed to excel in the field.

  1.    Mathematics and coding whether it is R, Python, C++ or Java are essential skills.     However, it is not necessary to know all the programming languages.

2.    If you are not keen on reporting, writing, documenting and delivering presentations then Data Science may not be for you. You will be required to explain the basics of your models or techniques to your project management, administrative overhead, or stakeholders.

3.    Another very decisive factor is when to start. Training someone to be a data scientist doesn’t happen at the point when the candidates join the organisation.

“It should start within the campus or colleges,” Deepak Kumar Arora, head of learning and development at Birlasoft, said.

4.    You should be comfortable working independently. You will be facing a variety of issues all day and most of the time it will require you to work on the issue and solve it by yourself.

5.    Don’t expect to see results immediately or everyday. Just like being a research scientist, very often you will be working on challenges for days before you find a breakthrough. So Data Science is only for those who can exercise patience.

So, start early to figure out if Data Science is what you want. And like any learning, it is much easier when it’s a social activity. When you have others going through the same process as you, you can learn from and encourage each other.

Choose live and interactive programs that allow some level of social interaction with peers, discussions in groups and active instructor involvement.
